BIO

Erich Nagler is a writer and designer based in New York City. He holds a BFA in Integrated Design from Parsons, and works in the fields of art direction, graphic design, and illustration.

Erich cut his teeth in publishing as Assistant Designer at Nest Magazine—winner of National Magazine Awards for General Excellence in 2000 and Outstanding Design in 2001—where Erich also worked on a team to redesign Editor-in-Chief Joseph Holtzman’s showpiece estate in upstate New York. After Nest closed in 2004, Erich became Assistant Art Director of Metropolis Magazine, finalist for the 2007 National Magazine Award for General Excellence.

Erich stepped down from his post at Metropolis at the end of 2007 to embark on a six-month residency in Helsinki, Finland, where he worked as part of the Anteeksi design collective. His design-research project was made possible through a grant from the Finlandia Foundation.

Returning to New York from Helsinki in 2008, Erich worked as a book designer at HarperCollins Publishers, then as a designer on Paula Scher’s team at Pentagram, and in 2010–2011 as an iPad app designer/developer at Travel + Leisure Magazine. In the spring of 2011, he was brought on as a freelance art director at Newsweek magazine for their re-design and re-launch, under editor Tina Brown.

Erich continues to maintain his freelance design practice and independent studio, and is co-publisher of the literary journal Red Line Blues and Creative Director of the queer-nerd journal FAQNP. Erich is also at work on an illustrated novel.
